SELF-ADVOCACY TRAINING

Self-Advocacy Training 


Our Self-Advocacy Training Program is designed to empower individuals by enhancing their ability to effectively communicate, convey, negotiate, and assert their own interests and desires. This program is particularly beneficial for those applying to postsecondary institutions or potential employers, as it equips them with the skills to communicate their strengths, goals, and needs effectively.


The program comprises of three stand-alone courses:


     Self-Awareness: This course aims to increase participants’ understanding of their strengths,  

    skills, and disability-related needs pertaining to employment and education.

    Topic covered include:

  • Disability disclosure
  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Self-reflection
  • Knowledge of rights and responsibilities


     Self-efficacy: This course is designed to build participants’ skills in communicating with 

    employers and educational institutions about their strengths and needs. 

    Topic covered include:

  • Effective communication
  • Requesting help
  • Assertiveness
  • Listening
  • Identifying and requesting accommodations
  • Problem-solving


     Self-determination: This course aims to increase participants’ skills in identifying and 

    achieving goals, including those related to education, employment, and personal fulfillment.     

    Topics covered include:

  • Decision-making
  • Goal setting and attainment
  • Leadership
  • Progress monitoring


Through these courses, we strive to foster self-advocacy, enabling individuals to confidently navigate their personal and professional journeys.

  Participants must: 

• Be between the ages of 14 and 21 years old
• Be enrolled in a formal education program (secondary or postsecondary)
• Have a documented disability (individual education plan (IEP), individual plan for employment (IPE), 504 Plan, or other acceptable documentation).
